This presentation forms part of a research project carried out at Facultad de Filosofía, Humanidades y Artes, Universidad Nacional de San Juan. In the belief that learning strategies play a fundamental role in the process of acquiring a foreign language, we set out to investigate whether explicit and embedded strategy-based instruction (SBI), results in our students' improved proficiency within the limited scope of pronunciation in English. We implemented the SBI based on Oxford's (1990) and O'Malley and Chamot's (1990) taxonomies which were slightly adapted to suit our particular interest - pronunciation. Finally, we evaluated the usefulness of the period of instruction and concluded that by equipping our students with a repertoire of strategies, they not only become more proficient in their interlanguage phonology, mainly in the speaking skill, but also maximize their efforts and eventually gain greater autonomy as learners.
