NARVAJA DE ARNOUX, Elvira. La normatividad genérica en la construcción del Estado chileno: el Curso de Bellas Letras de Vicente Fidel López (1845). Cuad.Sur, Let. [online]. 2005, n.35-36, pp. 27-52. ISSN 1668-7426.
Vicente Fidel López published Curso de Bellas Letras -a product of his experience as a professor of Rhetoric- in Chile, halfway through the XIX century, a period characterised by a booming economy and political stability, in which republican institutions were progressively being set in motion. In this context, V. F. López opposed the Chilean ruling class's will to regulate the exercise of democracy by writing a normative text which defines the legitimate genres and places to utter the public word. This article shows the importance that the author, who is sensitive to modern rationality, gives to the determination of explicit parameters for the definition and classification of genres and sub-genres as well as his purpose in considering both oral and written productions. Also, the article presents the way in which V.F. López characterises the different types of eloquence establishing relationships between thematic, stylistic and compositional choices and the social practices which frame the occurrence of each type. Finally, careful attention is drawn to the treatment of the lesson, considered as the typical genre of higher education, which the text relates to political eloquence.
