This articles studies the way in which Joaquín V. González' La tradición nacional (1888) introduces an alternative account of the historical formation of "Argentine-ness" with the purpose of challenging established views of the origin and development of the nation-specially those upheld by two prominent intellectuals, Mitre and Sarmiento. In this context, the article examines the role played by lettered discourses and institutions in the articulation of González's new version of the Argentine literary canon-whose symbolic axes were the Andean culture, the civic values of epic heroes, and the domestic pedagogical space. In this way, the article attempts to reconsider the homogenous and linear critical approaches to Argentina's cultural nationalism of late nineteenth century.
