The essay, genre frequently defined as composite, multifaceted, even arbitrary, defends its own legality by being bearer of controversies, conversations, interpellations, representation, symbolization. This type of discurse, characterized, among other aspects, by the presence of a manifest ego, displays a wide range of subjects. This voice expounds a subject matter that arises from the worries of someone who regards himself as a privileged observer of the events of the time. The essay "Chile, Polonia, ninguna parte", which forms part of the book by Jorge Edwards Chile en la mira. Proposiciones y conjuros para contrallevar el fin de siglo, is analized in this work. There is consideration of the text structure and strategies the author appeals to in order to give shape to a common topic in the essays during the second half of the 20th century in Chile: its present and past history and its future.
