The popular language characterized a good part of the literature of the twenties. Arduous debates accompanied its incorporation in the bosom of the learned field, which illuminated again old polemics concerning the question of the national language. In this frame, Roberto Arlt's writing turns out to be emblematic of the tensions to which the authors were submitted when using lunfardo, the cocoliche and other forms from the popular language of the River Plate region. In this work, it is analyzed the ambiguous and complex process of inverted commas in the lunfardas words and popular drafts in the writing of El juguete rabioso´s author. The proposed analysis not only tries to illuminate how Arlt incorporates the popular forms into his literature; also it forwards to diverse questions related to Arlt's place in the learned field, as well as with his unavoidable presence in the polemics concerning the language.
