Both the first version of the Deep Ecology movement of 1973 and the following once as from the changes introduced in 1984 assume that the only way to overcome the present environmental crisis faced by human society would be by means of a radical change in the cultural paradigm. Naess and the other supporters of that stream of environmental philosophy assert, as in classical pragmatism, the decisive value of beliefs in taking action, especially when deciding on new practical paths leading from present, unsatisfactory situation, to a future one envisaged as preferable. The strong utopic intention of the proposal is focused on the call to consider the biocentrism option, and discourage hegemonic anthropocentrism. Biocentrism is an antropic construction but it is not anthropocentric; it sees man as uncentered, as one other part of that delicate biosphere fabric on which he depends.
