Abstract

ZORRILLA, Natalia L.. Libertinaje y política en Sade. Cuad. Sur, Filos. [online]. 2011, n.40, pp. 179-196. ISSN 2362-2989.

The aim of this paper is analyzing the concept of indifference (or apathy) in Sade's works, exploring the relation between Sadean atheism and libertine philosophy. For Sade, atheism entails the denial of any normative instance that may act as a moral authority. Thus, his interventions in politics are based on this premise; even if we must suppose, as some interpreters affirm, that the Libertine Republic is only imaginary or impossible, Sade's intake on power relations still remains a valid and interesting object of study. Therefore, we try to assess the Sadean conception of pedagogy, examining the mechanisms by which the subject is conditioned, devices that can operate on the Christian man, on the libertine and on the citizen. This study is furthermore relevant, if we consider Sade's proposals as an active citizen during the time of the French Revolution.

Keywords : Apathy; Politics; Libertinage.
