Abstract

Cesar Zumeta was one of the most influencing intellectuals in Venezuela by the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. This work approaches texts from his major works, such as El continente enfermo, Tiempo de América y Europa, y Hombres y problemas de America Latina, among others. In addition, through a philosophical reading, his ideas on the positivist doctrinal foundations of his thought, his innterpretation of reality and his standing reegarding education, the Church, politics, art, and the Latin American fate with regard to the power of the United States are analyzed. Among the conclusions reached, the charracterization of his ideas in favor of applying a positive scientific method to study Venezuela's reality and to achieve the overcoming of factors that hinder the technical and cultural development desired for Venezuela and the Latin American region is included.
