Resumen

MIRANDA, Lida. Los terratenientes pampeanos y la Iglesia Católica, 1880-1920. Cuad. Sur, Hist. [online]. 2005, n.34, pp. 125-149. ISSN 1668-7604.

Pampean landowners indifferent to religion, has been a recurrent idea in historiography since the end of 19th century. Notwithstanding, as evidenced by the Catholic press between 1890 and 1920, landowners and their families played active roles in the promotion of Catholicism: they donated lands to build churches, participated in neighbor associations devoted to building churches in different places in Buenos Aires Province; actively participated in mass and the organization of benefit bazaars and parties for the local church; donated images and religious works of art which were mostly imported from Europe and convoked and organized missions in their estancias being the clergy especially invited. Missions in the estancias became more frequent after 1890s when private chapels, some of them majestically built in neo-gothic style, began to multiply. The Catholic press not only reflected each of these events, but also built an image of the Pampean landowner highlighting their pious and moral traits.
