We present a critical review of the state of the art in "Natural Risk" studies. We used several sources in order to perform a phenomenological analysis of major concepts related to this topic. These concepts are illustrated with national and international examples. The review includes the evolution of risk studies, including major contributions from the end of the 19th century up to the beginning of the 21st century, recognizing the contributions of a number of international organizations and authors. Finally, we analyze a number of conceptual models in the literature in order to approach risk studies. Based on this model review, a new conceptual proposal that integrates three risk factors: threat, historical frequency, and vulnerability is derived.
