VALENZUELA, Cristina; MARI, Oscar  y  SCAVO, Ángel. Persistence and Transformation of Traditional Cotton Producing Areas in Chaco Province, Argentina. Rev. Univ. geogr. [online]. 2011, vol.20, n.1, pp. 117-150. ISSN 1852-4265.

This paper studies the transformations of the traditional cotton-producing sector in Chaco Province, Argentina, and attempts to expose the socioeconomic and cultural incidence of cotton production in the area of study as well as the efforts of public policies in order to recover this activity after the decline shown by the end of the '90s and the accelerated expansion of other agricultural practices. Thus, we analyze the evolution of cotton production from the beginning of the 20th century up to the deep crisis suffered between 1998 and 2008. In 2008, the rise in international prices for this commodity determined a slow recovery for the sector. This is an empirical-qualitative research with a methodological strategy based on semi-structured interviews and qualified informants2 as well as the analysis of secondary statistical, documentary, and census sources.
