Abstract

CAMPOS MESQUITA, Fernando  and  EUDES LEMOS ALVES, Vicente. Globalization and transformation of the agricultural landscape in Latin America: the new regions of expansion of soybean cultivation in Brazil and Argentina. Rev. Univ. geogr. [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.2, pp. 11-42. ISSN 1852-4265.

With the growth of soybean production in Latin America, a new relationship between agriculture and region is being built. As a result, certain areas marked by different historical and social contexts have gone through similar processes to those of landscape transformation; as if they were part of a same region. The aim of this paper is to present evidence to define the soybean production system from the study of recent conditions which highlight the progress of this activity in the states of Maranhão, Piauí, Tocantins and Bahía, in Brazil, and the provinces of Chaco and Formosa, in Argentina. This analysis was based on literature concerning these regions, secondary data and information about soybean production in both countries. Conclusions point to the fact that in the period marked by globalization, the studied areas can be considered as part of the same expansion dynamics of territories intended for soybean growth.
