Coastal ecosystems provide a wide range of provision and cultural services as well as regulations from which societies benefit. In Buenos Aires province, coastal ecosystems are among the most endangered systems due to the processes and pressures that come together and materialize. One of the main reasons for this significant alteration has been the change in the use of land shown by the coastal ecosystem assessment carried out at different historical periods. This paper aimed to analyze the transformation and functionalization of the coastal socio-ecological system from changes in the use of the land in the coastal socio-ecosystem of the province of Buenos Aires. A periodization was carried out in five stages where the resulting social space together with modifications and alterations to the ecosystem were analyzed. Results show that more coastal ecosystems in Buenos Aires have been removed, altered and degraded during the last decades of the 20th century than in any other period of history. In addition, demands related to the real estate business contribute to this habitat fragmentation.
