Resumen

ARAYA OJEDA, Marcelo  y  ISLA, Federico Ignacio. Variabilidad hidrológica en la región del Biobío: los eventos El Niño en zonas templadas de Chile. Rev. Univ. geogr. [online]. 2016, vol.25, n.1, pp. 31-55. ISSN 1852-4265.

Rivers from Northern Chile are particularly sensitive to ENSO events. These cycles also strike on template watersheds where they are masked by other floods caused by local rainfall. Through hydrological records, events at the Biobío Region affecting both, the large watersheds draining the Andes Cordillera and the small watersheds from the coastal plain, were identified. The floods in 1941, 1972 and 2002 were comparatively analyzed with special reference to the major ENSO-triggered floods in 1982/83 and 1997/98. Similar hydrological behaviour was recorded and should be considered in risk assessments and land-use planning.
