This article analyzes energy transition processes in the Argentine electrical matrix from 1950 to the present. Three transition stages with clear trends and marked predominance are identified in the assessment of energy sources and techniques. Each stage is described in terms of the composition of the electrical matrix, the transformations in the techniques of generation of electricity and the geographical expression of such evolution. In summary, the gradual transition from the predominantly fossil configuration that prevailed until the early 1970s (first stage) to the diversified configuration based on the promotion of hydroelectricity, nuclear energy and natural gas as substitute sources of liquid fuels (second stage). Since the late 1990s, the high levels of hydrocarbon dependence have been restored and the thrust of the rest of the sources and generation techniques (third stage) have been cancelled. Therefore, in terms of fossil dependence the analysis shows that over the past four decades, the Argentine power matrix has experienced a cycle of progress and setbacks. Efforts to get back on track of diversification and sustainability of the sector in the context of the energy emergency declared after 2004 are still insufficient.
