MERLOTTO, Alejandra; BERTOLA, Germán Ricardo y ISLA, Federico Ignacio. Riesgo de erosión costera de la provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Rev. Univ. geogr. [online]. 2017, vol.26, n.2, pp. 37-72. ISSN 1852-4265.
The increasing complexity of nature-society relationship together with the estimates of climatic change and its effects on waves and coastal storms have asserted the importance of coastal phenomenon studies due to the particular vulnerability of both littoral areas and their population. Indices of the two components of risk, hazard and vulnerability, were constructed to assess coastal erosion risk in Buenos Aires Province. Based on different indicators, the indices allowed assessing the hazard characteristics (geomorphology, beach slope, erosion rates, etc.) and the population exposed to coastal erosion (quantity, sanitary condition, education level, etc.). The resulting zoning risk map outlined from very low to high hazard areas, and very low to moderate vulnerability. Coastal erosion risk is overall low in the study area although there are small sectors of moderate risk. The results reveal that risk assessment may develop practical and adequate tools for designing prevention and coastal erosion mitigation strategies according to the features of each sector.
