From an interactional sociolinguistics and institutional discourse analysis framework (Drew y Heritage, 1998; Drew y Sorjonen, 2000), we present how pilots and air traffic controllers' institutional orientations (toward their institutional identities and tasks) result partly in the depersonalization of their statements. This phenomenon takes different forms and we analyze two of them: the system of treatments and nominalizations. In the first case, speakers resort to a particular system of nominal treatments with a clear identifying function. In the case of nominalization, the presentation of verbal processes as nouns expresses the sequence of characteristic actions that give meaning to the institution. However, in contrast with the use of these linguistic devices, standardized by regulations specific to this type of organizations, some recorded interactions show evidence of interference from everyday communication practices. In this paper we present these cases as evidence of the tension that occurs between institutional communication skills, focused on the goal of maintaining safe linguistic interactions to build an environment of equal trait, and communication skills the speakers have as members of a larger linguistic community, in this case of the Spanish variety.
